When I pick up the house phone and press '#', HAL doesn't respond.

NOTE: This feature requires a HAL-compatible modem.

Double-check that the pound (#) key is the key that's supposed to get HAL's attention from house phones. Go to the Telephone Configuration screen to verify which key is to be used.
Make sure you are waiting for the dial tone to slightly change or you hear a faint 'click' before pressing '#'; HAL may not have realized that you have picked up the house phone.
Verify that your house phone(s) is properly connected to the HAL-compatible modem (see the related FAQ).
Some multi-line phones or electronic phones do not work well with some modems -- try using an older style analog phone.
HAL may have been confused by someone in the house ending one conversation with HAL while another person is picking up the phone. Hang up the phone and try again.
