Why don't all modems work with HAL?

There are a couple of reasons for this. The first reason is that HAL uses voice capabilities that are included with newer modems. Since a lot of modems are not voice modems, they will not work with HAL. The second reason is that not all modems support the same features that HAL uses in all the same ways. HAL is also the only product of its kind to provide voice recognition through the telephone, and this alone requires some features that few voice-capable modems include.

 

It is possible to use other modems with HAL, but you may not be able to use all of HAL's features, especially the telephony features. For instance, the feature that most modems don't include is the ability to detect when the telephone has been taken off-hook. Without this feature, HAL cannot know when you want to issue a command via the telephone. Whereas in some case you may still be able to call in from a remote phone to talk to HAL, you will definitely not be able to use phones within the house to talk to HAL unless the modem includes the off-hook detection feature. Other telephony features may not be available if a HAL-compatible modem is not used.
